Of Tech Teams and Rock Bands

My name is Kaitlyn Hova and I’ve lived many lives. I started my career as a professional solo violinist at 13, moved to Neuroscience (because college is crazy), switched to Software Engineering, and now am in Management. These careers don’t seem related but as time has gone on I’ve been finding that everything is. After going into management I have realized just how tough it is and why I haven’t had many managers in the past to point to and say “YES that’s IT. THAT was management done well”. Because of this deficit, I’ve been pulling from past experiences to connect the dots on what a good manager does.

A “is this…management” meme I made at 2 in the morning because it made me laugh.

Ok, buckle up. We were listening to some classic Led Zeppelin early in the morning this week when it hit me: What if a tech team is like a classic rock band? Well, why not? Roles and their responsibilities are important for both tech teams and musical groups. Some people bounce around different roles (like full stack engineers or members of The Beatles) but the roles are always present. What part does everyone play and why?

Note: there are a lot of great bands with non traditional arrangements (looking at you, White Stripes). Please just have fun with this. If you have any ideas to add to this analogy please comment or tweet me at kaitlynhova
